100 Resume Power Verbs to Replace Weak Phrases

Power verbs only work when they carry a real task and a number behind them. The fastest way to learn the swap is to see a finished resume that uses them properly, then borrow the pattern: verb, task, scope in your own units, result.

The sample below is an operations coordinator, because the role produces countable work — deliveries, purchase orders, tickets, suppliers, days. The verb bank in the second section is grouped into ten families of ten so you can find the right word for the thing you actually did, rather than reaching for the loudest one.

How to write each section

Work top to bottom. The verb choice only matters once the structure is right.

Header

  1. Put your name on its own line at 16–20pt, everything else at 10–11pt.
  2. Add city and country, one phone number, one professional email address, and a LinkedIn handle if the profile is current.
  3. Leave out your full street address, date of birth, marital status and photo for UK, US, Canadian and Australian applications. In parts of continental Europe, Asia and the Middle East a photo and date of birth are still normal — check what local employers expect before you decide.
  4. Keep margins at 1 inch (2.5 cm) on all four sides, or 0.75 inch if you are fighting for space. Anything tighter looks cramped when printed.

Summary

A formula that works:

Summary formula

[Job title] with [number] years in [sector or function]. [Power verb + your biggest ongoing responsibility + scope in your own units]. [Power verb + one improvement + before-and-after number]. [One line on the kind of role you want, if you are changing direction.]

Example 1 — mid-level

Operations coordinator with six years across distribution and e-commerce fulfilment. Coordinates inbound scheduling for three warehouses and 60–80 deliveries a week; rebuilt a purchase order approval flow that cut average approval time from four days to one.

Example 2 — entry level

Business graduate with a 12-month logistics placement. Processed 120–150 goods-in lines a day and automated a returns log that cut daily reconciliation from 45 minutes to 10. Looking for an operations assistant role in distribution or fulfilment.

Three or four lines is plenty. If the summary does not contain a single number, it is a mission statement, not a summary.

Experience

The bullet formula:

Bullet formula

Power verb + what you did + scope in the role's own units + result or timeframe.

Scope means the thing your industry counts: deliveries a week, purchase orders, SKUs, suppliers, tickets a day, sites, headcount trained, days of cycle time, pounds or dollars of spend. Result means what changed. If nothing changed, scope alone still beats a vague claim.

Example bullets, one from each verb family:

  • Coordinated inbound scheduling for 3 warehouses, sequencing 60–80 deliveries a week against 14 dock doors.
  • Built a stock-cover dashboard in Power BI for 12 buyers, replacing a 3-hour manual report.
  • Streamlined the purchase order approval route, cutting average approval time from 4 days to 1.
  • Audited 1,200 open backorders and cleared 78% within six weeks.
  • Briefed the site management team weekly on service failures across 3 carriers, in a 10-minute standing slot.
  • Migrated 4,000 SKU records from spreadsheets into NetSuite with a 2-day changeover and no order downtime.
  • Reconciled 18 staff expense claims a month across 4 cost codes and cut rejected claims from 12 to 3.
  • Renewed supply agreements with 9 vendors, holding unit costs flat through a year of price increases.
  • Triaged 45–60 delivery cases a day in Zendesk with first response under 2 hours.
  • Verified pick accuracy on 200 sampled orders a month and logged variances against a 99.5% target.

Four or five bullets for your current job, three for older ones. Anything more than ten years back can shrink to a single line: title, employer type, dates.

The 100-verb bank

Pick the family that matches what you actually proved, then the word inside it that is honest about your level. Spelling follows the market you are applying in — analysed / analyzed, optimised / optimized.

Leading and owning (use only where you had real authority): Led · Directed · Oversaw · Chaired · Coordinated · Delegated · Mentored · Supervised · Spearheaded · Championed

Building and launching (something exists now that did not before): Built · Launched · Designed · Developed · Established · Introduced · Created · Engineered · Piloted · Founded

Improving (there is a before and an after): Streamlined · Simplified · Standardised · Reduced · Accelerated · Optimised · Redesigned · Overhauled · Consolidated · Automated

Analysing (you produced a finding): Analysed · Audited · Assessed · Benchmarked · Diagnosed · Evaluated · Forecast · Investigated · Modelled · Quantified

Communicating and influencing: Briefed · Presented · Wrote · Edited · Translated · Documented · Advised · Persuaded · Negotiated · Facilitated

Delivering projects and change: Delivered · Shipped · Executed · Implemented · Completed · Scheduled · Prioritised · Tracked · Migrated · Rolled out

Money and budget: Budgeted · Cut · Saved · Secured · Funded · Invoiced · Reconciled · Recovered · Priced · Allocated

Growth, sales and retention: Grew · Increased · Expanded · Acquired · Retained · Upsold · Converted · Sourced · Closed · Renewed

Service, support and people development: Resolved · Triaged · Escalated · Supported · Trained · Onboarded · Coached · Guided · Serviced · Restored

Quality, safety and compliance: Verified · Validated · Inspected · Tested · Certified · Monitored · Enforced · Safeguarded · Remediated · Reviewed

Three rules for using them:

  1. Do not inflate. Spearheaded a two-person task reads worse than ran it. Interviewers ask follow-up questions and the gap shows.
  2. Do not repeat. Scan down the left edge of your bullets — if Managed appears four times, three of them are the wrong verb.
  3. Match tense. Present tense for your current job, past tense for everything else, consistently.

Skills

Keep it to one block of 8–12 items, weighted towards named tools and systems rather than adjectives. Write the software the way the job ad writes it: NetSuite ERP, not ERP systems. If you claim Excel, say what level — XLOOKUP, pivot tables, Power Query tells a recruiter more than advanced. Soft skills belong inside experience bullets where there is evidence for them, not in a list.

Education

One line per qualification: award, subject, grade if it helps, year. Put education below experience once you have two years of work behind you, and above it while you are a student or recent graduate. Add a placement, dissertation topic or relevant modules only if they do work the experience section cannot.

Licences and certifications

List the exact name, the awarding body where it is not obvious, and the year. Add an expiry date for anything that lapses — forklift licences, first aid, IOSH and CSCS-style cards, professional memberships. For the role in this sample that means things like Lean Six Sigma Yellow or Green Belt, Microsoft Office Specialist Excel (MO-201), IOSH Working Safely, an RTITB or ITSSAR forklift licence, CILT membership, APICS CPIM or CSCP for supply chain, and a driving licence if the job involves travelling between sites. Do not list a certification you are studying for as if you hold it — write in progress, exam booked [month/year].

Weak vs strong bullets

Same job, same facts. The difference is a verb that names the action and a number that gives it size.

Pair 1 — purchase orders

Weak

Responsible for processing purchase orders and chasing suppliers.

Strong

Processed 70–90 purchase orders a week in NetSuite and chased 9 suppliers on late lines, cutting average approval time from 4 days to 1.

Pair 2 — inbound scheduling

Weak

Helped with warehouse delivery scheduling and worked closely with the team.

Strong

Sequenced 60–80 inbound deliveries a week across 14 dock doors at 3 sites, with no missed unload slots in two quarters.

Pair 3 — reporting

Weak

Produced various reports for management on a regular basis.

Strong

Built a Power BI stock-cover dashboard for 12 buyers, replacing a weekly report that took 3 hours to compile by hand.

Pair 4 — training

Weak

Involved in training new starters on our systems.

Strong

Trained 7 new coordinators on WMS receiving and cycle counting, each running a shift unsupervised within 3 weeks.

What changed in each case: the opening word does the work, the vague quantifier (various, regular, closely) is replaced by a count, and the outcome is stated in the unit the employer already tracks. If you cannot find a number, use frequency (a day, a week, a month), volume (SKUs, tickets, sites) or duration (three weeks, two quarters) instead.

Skills to include

SkillHard or softHow to show it on the resume
Excel (Power Query, pivot tables, XLOOKUP)HardName the functions in the skills block, then a bullet showing a report you automated and the time it saved
ERP data entry and hygiene (NetSuite, SAP, Dynamics 365)HardName the exact system; bullet the record volume you maintained and any migration you ran
Warehouse management system (WMS) operationHardBullet goods-in lines a day, cycle counts completed, or discrepancies investigated
Inbound and outbound schedulingHardBullet deliveries a week, dock doors or sites covered, and your slot adherence
Supplier communication and follow-upSoftBullet the number of suppliers, what you renegotiated, and the lead-time or OTIF change
Purchase-to-pay process knowledgeHardBullet PO volume, approval cycle time before and after, and backlog cleared
Data analysis and reporting (Power BI, Looker Studio)HardBullet the dashboard, who used it, and the manual process it replaced
SOP writing and documentationHardBullet how many procedures you wrote and which team adopted them
Prioritising under competing deadlinesSoftBullet peak-period volumes and the service level you held through them
Training and onboarding colleaguesSoftBullet how many people you trained and how quickly they became independent
Problem investigation and root causeSoftBullet the discrepancies or incidents you investigated per week and what stopped recurring
Ticketing and case handling (Zendesk, Freshdesk, Jira Service Management)HardBullet cases a day, first-response time and repeat-contact rate

Order the list so the first three items match the first three requirements in the job ad. Drop anything you would not want to be questioned on for ten minutes.

Pay and outlook

Pay for coordinator and operations-support roles is usually set as an annual salary in office-based settings and an hourly rate in warehouse, shift or agency settings. Overtime, shift premiums for nights and weekends, and an annual or quarterly bonus tied to site performance are common additions; a company vehicle or mileage allowance appears where the job covers more than one site. Agency and fixed-term contracts often quote a higher hourly rate with fewer benefits attached, so compare total package rather than headline rate.

What moves the number:

  • Sector. Third-party logistics, food distribution, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing all price the same job title differently, largely because of compliance load and shift patterns.
  • Scope. Number of sites, order or PO volume, whether you hold budget, and whether anyone reports to you.
  • Systems. Fluency in a named ERP or WMS, plus real analysis skill in Excel, SQL or Power BI, tends to be the line between coordinator and analyst pay bands.
  • Shift pattern. Nights, weekends, early starts and on-call rotas usually carry a premium.
  • Location. Regional differences within a single country are often larger than differences between employers, and city-centre roles do not always pay more once commuting costs are counted.
  • Certification. Formal supply chain credentials, a forklift licence or process-improvement belts can widen the range of roles you are considered for, though they rarely change pay on their own.

Check current rates in official data rather than aggregator averages. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the Occupational Outlook Handbook and the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics series. In the United Kingdom, use the Office for National Statistics Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings alongside the National Careers Service profiles. In Canada, the federal Job Bank gives wage ranges by region; in Australia, Jobs and Skills Australia publishes occupation data; across the EU, EURES and national statistics offices carry equivalent figures. Then read twenty current job ads in your own postcode or zip code, because advertised ranges show what employers are paying now rather than what they paid at the last survey.

On outlook, expect demand to track the health of the sector you work in rather than the job title itself. Automation tends to shift this kind of work away from manual data entry and towards exception handling, supplier management and reporting — which is another reason to make sure the analysis and systems bullets on your resume are the strongest ones.

Frequently asked questions

What if I have no experience to attach the verbs to?

Use the same verb families on non-job work. Placements, part-time jobs, volunteering, society committees, freelance work and substantial coursework all produce countable output. A student who reconciled the accounts for a 40-member society, trained four seasonal stockroom staff, or modelled reorder points for a 50-SKU range has three usable bullets. Keep the formula intact: verb, task, scope, result. *Rebuilt the society's membership spreadsheet in Excel, cutting renewal chasing from two evenings to one* is a real bullet. *Gained experience in administration* is not. On an entry-level resume, put education first, add a Projects block if your coursework is relevant, and be honest about hours — writing *part-time, 16 hrs/week* next to a job title costs you nothing and stops a recruiter assuming you have overstated it.

What file format and layout should I send?

Send a PDF unless the employer or the application portal asks for a Word document. PDF holds your spacing; some portals parse .docx more reliably, so keep both versions. Use one standard font throughout — Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, Georgia or Times New Roman — at 10–11pt for body text, 16–20pt for your name, and 12–13pt for section headings. Keep margins at 1 inch (2.5 cm), use a single column, and skip tables, text boxes, headers, footers, icons and graphics for the version you upload to a portal. Bold is fine for job titles and headings; avoid underlining anything that is not a link. Name the file so a human can find it later: Firstname-Lastname-Operations-Coordinator.pdf. Then open the PDF, select all the text and paste it into a blank document — if the order scrambles, the layout is too complicated.

How long should it be?

One page if you have under about ten years of relevant experience, or you are a student or recent graduate. Two pages once you have a decade of work, multiple employers or a long certification list. Three pages only for academic CVs, medical CVs, or senior roles in countries where a longer document is the norm — check the local convention before you assume. The cut usually comes from the oldest jobs, not the newest. Compress anything more than ten years old to one line each, delete duties that every holder of the job performs, and remove skills lists that repeat what the bullets already prove. In several countries the document is called a CV and is still expected to be short and targeted; in others a CV means a full academic record. If a job ad says CV and you are applying in the UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand, the one-to-two page document described here is what they mean.

Do stronger verbs actually change anything, or is it cosmetic?

On their own, cosmetic. A verb swap with no number behind it just changes the packaging — *spearheaded various initiatives* is no more informative than *helped with projects*. What the verb does is force the rest of the sentence. Once you write *Reduced*, you have to say reduced what, from what, to what. Once you write *Trained*, you have to say how many people and how quickly they became independent. That is where the value sits: the verb is a prompt to state scope, and scope is what a hiring manager reads. There is a second use for the bank. Reading down your bullets and finding the same two or three verbs repeated is a reliable sign that you have described one kind of work and left the rest of the job invisible. Swapping in verbs from other families — analysis, communication, quality, money — usually surfaces work you had forgotten to mention.

LinkedIn Profile vs Resume: Key Differences Explained

The short answer: a resume is a private, tailored document you send for one specific job, cut to 1–2 pages and written for one reader who already has a vacancy. A LinkedIn profile is a public, searchable page that stays up all year, written in the first person for recruiters, clients and former colleagues who find you before they know anything about you. The facts are the same; the targeting, the tone, the length and the file are not.

How to Tailor Your Resume for Every Job Application

Tailoring does not mean rewriting your resume. It means keeping one master file and changing four things for each application: the headline, the summary, the skills list, and the wording and order of the bullets in your two most recent roles. Employers, dates, titles, qualifications and licence details stay exactly the same in every version.

How to Write a Resume With No Work Experience

You do not need a job to fill a resume. Volunteer shifts, school projects, club committees, coaching, caring at home and informal paid work like babysitting or tutoring all belong in the experience section — written the way a job would be written: action verb, task, and a number that shows the scale of it.
